El Frontón is Europe's most powerful wave: a heavy barrel over shallow reef, at the foot of the Gáldar cliff. Since 2013, Gran Canaria has been the world capital of bodyboarding. Every October the planet's best riders close out the world tour here. And it is on this wave that the titles are decided.
The banana tradition
On the podium the champion has to lift a whole bunch of bananas, 50 to 70 kilos, and hold it while the crowd counts to ten. Beside them, a puppy of the island's own breed and a playing card, the king of clubs. The three symbols of Gáldar.

The organisers pick the six best days of the window according to the state of the sea.
A good day at El Frontón needs three things at once: a high tide, a long north-westerly swell and an offshore wind. When they line up, the wave breaks hollow over the shelf and the contest runs.
